Center for Developmental Behavioral Health

The Center for Developmental Behavioral Health is a multi-disciplinary outpatient mental health clinic in a specialty pediatric and rehabilitation hospital located in Baltimore, MD. It is dedicated to providing high quality, culturally relevant, consumer driven and comprehensive services for children and their families. The Center for Developmental Behavioral Health  provides services to children and families facing complex psychiatric, medical and developmental challenges. This includes conditions such as anxiety disorders (e.g., generalized anxiety, social anxiety, phobias), mood disorders (e.g., depression, bipolar disorder, and disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, DMDD), externalizing behaviors (e.g., oppositional behavior, conduct problems, hyperactivity, impulsivity) and obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (e.g., Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Hair Pulling Disorder, Tourette Syndrome). Clients range in age from elementary school age to young adulthood. Training strongly supports and encourages the utilization of evidence-based and evidence-informed practice in all clinical work within our multidisciplinary setting 

 Activities for externs include:  

• Diagnostic Evaluations: Externs will learn to compete diagnostic evaluations using standardized methodology. They will receive supervision focused on diagnostic clarification. 
• Psychological Testing: Interested externs will have the opportunity to administer intelligence, achievement, executive functioning and/or personality testing and write integrated reports. Externs interested in completing testing will receive supervision and will be required to attend weekly assessment rounds. 
• Therapy Experience: Externs will carry between four and six therapy cases during the externship year and will receive one hour of supervision per week. Supervision is included for all clinical activities.   
• Didactic Seminar: Externs have the opportunity to attend seminars on topics including psychotherapy, psychological assessment, psychiatric research and developmental disabilities.   

This externship provides a minimum of 16 hours per week and externs receive a stipend of $2,500.

Optional activities include a variety of didactic experiences that are based on individual needs, interests and time. Current offerings include participation in research studies, co-leading psychotherapy groups and parent management training groups. In addition, externs can participate in seminars on neuropsychological assessment though the Department of Neuropsychology at Kennedy Krieger Institute. However, these additional training activities may require a modest commitment of additional time.

This is an advanced training experience delivered by clinical psychologists who possess strong backgrounds in assessment, treatment and research. Students are expected to be entering their third year or above of an APA approved doctoral psychology program. A commitment to hard work is necessary but the trainee will be rewarded with a great deal of clinical experience and knowledge.
