We are proud to partner with several community programs supporting local Baltimore city students. Various departments at Kennedy Krieger sponsor these students and provide real-life experience in the healthcare sector.
In the past, Kennedy Krieger has supported 2-4 students each year.
Human Resources covers the cost for the departments who sponsor students from our Community Partners Summer Works Program ONLY.
This year we are planning to support 3 students. Deadline for Departments to Confirm Interest in Supporting a Community Partner Student January 24.
Our Community Partners:
Youthworks and Mayor’s Office:
YouthWorks, originally called Blue Chip, changed its name in 1987. The program originally began in 1973 and is now over 50! YouthWorks is a program within the Baltimore City Mayor’s Office of Employment Development, Youth Services Division.
- They provide a 5-week job opportunity to thousands of Baltimore City young people between the ages of 14 to 21.
- Students coming from YouthWorks would be at Kennedy within the months of July and August for 5 weeks. During this time, students would get the chance to work at Kennedy while also participating in the YouthWorks program. This means that students will be able to work part-time during their time as a Summer Works Staff.
Building Steps:
Through a series of five Program Components, Building STEPS provides experiences and opportunities that create the exposure and support necessary for college and career success.Building STEPS creates exposure and unlocks potential through a continuum of progressive programming that begins in 11th grade.
- Building Steps partners with 15 Baltimore City high schools to find high-achieving students in their sophomore year. Once accepted into Building STEPS, students begin programming in the fall of their junior year.
- Almost all Building STEPS students are the first in their family to earn a college degree and many are the first to graduate from high school.
- Nearly 80% of Building STEPS students earn a college degree.
- Students from Building STEPS, would be able to attend the Summer Works program until the end date set between the student and the department; but there is also the option to have them join the Summer Works program for 5 weeks if the department so chooses.
