Treatment plans are designed and tailored to the needs of each individual, to decrease severe problem behavior and increase appropriate replacement behavior.
Our behavioral psychologists use a data-driven approach for assessment and treatment, using an evidence-based applied behavior analysis (ABA) model. The ABA model is considered best practice for working with patients who display severe behavior problems. Each patient participates in a series of intensive tests, including functional analysis and reinforcer assessment. Based on the assessment results, we develop behavioral interventions and systematically evaluate their effectiveness. Treatment plans are designed and tailored to the needs of each individual, to decrease severe problem behavior and increase appropriate replacement behavior. Throughout the course of assessment and treatment, our team will communicate and collaborate with the patient’s family and service providers. A critical component of our treatment approach discharged, we provide structured, intensive training in behavioral program implementation for family members, caregivers, school staff, and residential service providers. This training ensures successful outcomes and helps maintain our patients’ progress over time.
The Neurobehavioral Outpatient Clinic provides the following services for children with severe behavioral disorders:
- Intensive Outpatient Program: The Intensive Outpatient program provides more intensive outpatient behavioral assessment and services to patients. Patients are seen approximately three to five hours per day, three to five days per week for up to 12 weeks. The typical patient in this program is seen five hours per day, five days per week for three weeks. The number of hours of therapy per week is equivalent to that received on an inpatient admission; however, these services are provided with the client and his/her family or care providers in a clinic setting. Once an effective intervention is developed, the treatment is generalized to the home, school and other appropriate locations in the community. Following the intensive portion of the program, the individual receives follow-up services to monitor maintenance of treatment gains.
- Day Treatment Program: For those patients in need of longer-term services, this program provides behavioral assessment and treatment services in the clinic on a weekly basis for 4 to 12 hours per week. The typical patient in this program is seen two hours per day, two days per week for 12 to 16 weeks.
- Follow-up Program: After patients are discharged from either the NBU Intensive Outpatient, Day Treatment, or Inpatient Service, they continue services in the NBU Follow-up program. Varying levels of service are provided by the follow-up program depending on the patient's needs and location. Generally, services are provided in the clinic, and may include provision of additional training to care providers in the implementation of the patient’s behavioral program, as well as ongoing behavioral assessment and treatment services. Because there is close collaboration and overlap of professional staff across the different programs, there is ongoing discussion and evaluation with regard to level of care needed by the persons served.
