Dr. Julio Quezada is a pediatric neurologist and pediatric behavioral neurologist in the department of Neurology and Neurodevelopmental Medicine at Kennedy Krieger Institute. He is also the associate director of the psychosomatic medicine program within the Center for Developmental and Behavioral Health.  

Education

Dr. Quezada was born and raised in Guatemala. He completed medical school at Universidad Francisco Marroquin. After medical school, he worked for three years as a field doctor for a sugar mill where he cared for the sugar cane workers as well as their families. He was accepted into residency in 2013 and completed a combined child neurology program at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. During residency, he also obtained a certificate in pediatric bioethics. After graduation, he held a position as faculty in the child neurology department of Children's Mercy Hospital and was part of the Ethics Committee. As faculty, he was the director of the Functional Neurological Disorders clinic and was part of the Tourette syndrome center of excellence faculty. He trained in hypnosis with the national pediatric diagnosis training institute and used this knowledge to help his patients with neurobehavioral conditions. During his time as faculty he was involved in education of residents and medical students both at the outpatient and inpatient settings. Dr. Quezada then returned to fellowship to further his education and understanding of the psychiatric dimensions of neurological conditions.

Research Summary

Research interests include: pharmacological management of tics and Tourette syndrome, understanding and treating functional neurological disorder, and neuroethics. During his fellowship, he completed IRB approved research looking into abnormalities in empathy in patients with functional neurological disorder. This research was presented in a poster at the American Neuropsychiatric Association meeting in 2023.
