Kennedy Krieger Institute is now accepting applications for the Advanced Specialty Training Program in Adult Down syndrome/IDD Medical Care. This 12-month clinical program, led by program director Dr. George Capone and faculty, focuses on teaching trainees to provide comprehensive medical and mental health care for adults with Down syndrome/IDD and other Neurological Developmental Disabilities (NDDs).

The training experience includes but is not limited to patients with Down syndrome, intellectual/developmental disabilities, epilepsy, brain-spinal cord injury, sleep disorders, movement disorders and other genetic and metabolic syndromes. The trainee will be on the faculty and staff at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and will have an Assistant level faculty appointment at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Program Description:

Since the goal of the program is to develop the clinical skills working with adults, trainees will spend most of their time seeing adult and adolescent patients focusing on evaluation, diagnosis, medical management, care planning, and communication with the interdisciplinary team. Direct (individual) and indirect (general) supervision will be provided. The trainee will have the opportunity to follow individual patients longitudinally throughout the year.

The trainee will be required to complete two academic projects with mentorship. These include:

  1. Delivering a regional talk to a primary care audience, giving a Kennedy Krieger Institute grand rounds or divisional conference presentation, or presenting a poster or talk at a national conference. Authoring a review paper is also an option. Other academic projects may be considered upon request
  2. Participation in administrative and project meetings involving clinical research studies in the Down syndrome/IDD population already underway at Kennedy Krieger/JHH
  3. Investigational Review Board Training: The fellow will complete IRB CITI training modules in Human Subjects Research-Biomedical Research, Good Clinical Practice, and Overview of Research with Vulnerable Subjects. Additional topics may also be considered.
