Pre-Master’s/Master’s Training

Due to a variety of reasons and factors, Speech-Language programs across Kennedy Krieger Institute are unable to support pre-master’s speech-language pathology students. This includes students who are pursuing a master’s degree in speech-language pathology who completed an undergraduate degree in another area of concentration.

Programs across Kennedy Krieger that have speech-language services often support graduate speech-language pathology students as part of graduate externships or fall or spring placements. Typically, we are unable to support summer placements for a variety of reasons. Our student placements usually are competitive with multiple students applying for a single placement. Students are encouraged to submit their application packets 2-3 months before the intended placement. This allows for ample time to review students’ materials and schedule interviews. Graduate student placements are coordinated by a Kennedy Krieger senior speech-language pathologist (SLP) who oversees placements across the Institute. Before graduate placements can occur there must be a current signed contract in place between the student’s university and Kennedy Krieger. The coordinating Kennedy Krieger SLP also facilitates that process.

When students complete graduate placements at Kennedy Krieger Institute, the on-going Kennedy Krieger speech-language supervisor(s) work with the student’s university and graduate student placement coordinator to complete clinical hour expectations and associated documentation. This includes fulfilling all graduate student requirements by the student’s university and the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA).
