Recognizing the Importance of Play
At the core of our services is the belief that play is a powerful tool for promoting health and healing. The Child Life and Recreation Therapies Department is a unique blend of specialty services provided by Child Life Specialists, Recreational Therapists and Music Therapists. Our team collaborates closely to address treatment goals, support adjustment, and enhance the quality of life for our patients, all within the nurturing play environment of our Rec Room.

Come Play with Us!
Located at the heart of the inpatient hospital, the Rec Room is a space designed for all ages and abilities!
Navigating Healthcare with Heart
Whether you’re visiting for an outpatient appointment or staying with us longer, we’re here to help every step of the way.
Therapy Can Be Fun Too!
We use a variety of recreational activities—such as games, crafts, sports, and more—as interventions to enhance functional skills like strength, coordination, and memory.
Healing Through Harmony
Our Board Certified Music Therapist uses a variety of musical interventions—such as instrument play, songwriting, and singing—to support sensorimotor, cognitive, speech and language, social, and emotional development.
Supporting Every Step of the Journey
Our team is committed to making every patient and family experience as supportive and positive as possible.
Sibshops
Kennedy Krieger Institute is excited to offer Sibshops, a nationally recognized program for siblings (ages 8 to 12) of complex and/or chronically ill children, for the siblings of patients receiving outpatient medical care.
Student Experiences
The Child Life and Recreation Therapies Department offers internship and pre-internship opportunities for students who want to gain experience serving patients in a variety of care settings.
