Dr. Zabel also completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in pediatric neuropsychology at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

He is a licensed psychologist in Maryland. He joined the Hopkins/KKI faculty in 2002. He is active in the mentoring programs at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, and participates in the neuropsychological training of externs, pre-doctoral interns, and post-doctoral residents.

For children diagnosed with Sturge-Weber Syndrome, Dr. Zabel provides neuropsychological evaluation to help clarify patterns of learning and behavior associated with different medical conditions involving the brain. Formal testing of abilities usually includes paper-and-pencil testing of attention, intelligence, memory, language, visual skills, motor abilities, emotions, adaptive life-skills, executive functioning, and academic functioning. Neuropsychological testing can be useful for the following:

  • Identifying cognitive strengths and intact abilities that can be used for treatment planning.
  • Identifying cognitive weaknesses associated with visual problems, seizures, medication-side effects, and brain abnormalities. Once identified, neuropsychologists make recommendations regarding how parents and the rest of the school planning team can intervene and/or accommodation for the noted weaknesses and increase the child's learning and success in school.
  • Monitoring the child's cognitive stability over time and identifying cognitive improvements and/or possible declines that may require medical attention.
  • Assisting in planning for the child's transition from adolescence into adulthood, and creating strategies to help the child assume adult-level responsibilities.
